Here’s what you need for Week 1: Butterflies + Migration:
Books (find at your local library or order below on Amazon):
- A Butterfly is Patient by Dianna Hutts Aston and Sylvia Long (or read it here on OpenLibrary)
- When Butterflies Cross the Sky: The Monarch Butterfly Migration by Sharon Katz Cooper (or listen to this read aloud)
- I Want to Fly Away! Animal Migration by Children’s Zoology Books
- The Bug Girl: Maria Merian’s Scientific Vision by Sarah Glenn Marsh (or listen to this read aloud)
- (-) The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl (or read it here on OpenLibrary)
Supplies (use what you have, but here are links to shop if you need anything):
- butterfly figurines
- butterfly kit
- pom poms
- glue
- cardstock
- green foam sheets (or you could use construction paper or cardstock)
- brown paper grocery bag (or you could use real twigs or brown construction paper)
- tissue paper
- party blowouts
- paint
- paper + access to a printer (don’t have one? we like this model)
- coffee filter
- markers
- spray bottle
- wooden clothespin
- googly eyes
- toilet paper roll
- laminator + laminating sheets (or you can use a sealing plastic freezer bag, but a laminator would work best)
- dry erase markers
- uncooked rice
- green food coloring
- sensory bin, tray, or baking dish
- bug catching tools (optional, but if your kids are like ours, they’ll get lots of use out of these materials!)
- artificial flowers (these can often be found cheaper at a craft store, or you could make out of tissue paper if you don’t have any on hand)
- yellow pony beads (could also use poms)
- math countering bocks (optional, but you will use these for years!)
- straws (or you could use a small paint brush)
- coloring supplies (crayons, colored pencils, etc.)
- mini popsicle sticks
Here’s what you need for Week 2: Savanna + Safari:
Books (find at your local library or order below on Amazon):
- The Tree of Life: The World of the African Baobab by Barbara Bash (or read it online at OpenLibrary)
- Sounds of the Savanna by Terry Catasus Jennings (or read it here on OpenLibrary—it says it’s in Spanish, but it is actually in English)
- We All Went on Safari: A Counting Journey through Tanzania by Laurie Krebs and Julia Cairns (or read it here on OpenLibrary or listen to this read aloud)
- Anna & Samia: The True Story of Saving a Black Rhino by Paul Meisel (or listen to this read aloud)
- Hippos Are Huge by Jonathan London (or listen to this read aloud)
Supplies (use what you have, but here are links to shop if you need anything)
- brown paper bag
- construction paper
- glue
- small box (shoebox size or slightly bigger)
- foil (could also use paper)
- paint
- the savanna animals from these zoo animal figurines
- paper + access to a printer (don’t have one? we like this model)
- large glass bowl
- plastic wrap
- rubberband
- laminator + laminating sheets (optional but recommended for repeating lessons)
- 2 toilet paper tubes
- hole punch
- yarn or string
- sensory bin (you could also use a baking sheet, shoebox, etc.)
- dried beans, uncooked rice, grass clippings, etc. for sensory bin activity (use what you have!)
- party blowout
- yellow craft foam sheets (you will need larger sheets for this project)
- brown foam sheets (or you could use a brown marker)
- dice
- Mancala game (or you can build your own with an empty egg carton and glass beads)
